The Pain of Counseling

Let me be honest here. Most of the time counseling is not fun. As your therapist, I might challenge you to open up about the most difficult things that have happened to you. I might challenge you to try a different perspective. I might help you see the way you were treated was abusive or, I might help you see the way you are treating others is abusive.

There’s one thing in common with all of us when we go to counseling: we acknowledge something isn’t working. From symptoms like sadness, tearfulness, confusion, anxiety, or relationship issues we know deep down things need to change. Things aren’t working. Counseling helps us be honest with ourselves about what is going on. It can help us curiously explore patterns that are no longer working for us (things like avoidance or judgment). We can work towards trying something different. It will be hard - sometimes exhausting- but it will be worth it.

So while the process of change may be painful, here’s my hope for you in our sessions:

I hope you feel heard

I hope you feel safe

I hope you feel valued

I hope you feel respected

I hope you feel challenged to be the best version of yourself

I hope you feel worthy of love, forgiveness, and grace
