Boundaries Check In: A Guide to Recognizing a Lack of Boundaries

In the busyness of life, it's easy to lose sight of our own well-being. As women navigating through all of our responsibilities and expectations, recognizing the signs that indicate a need for boundaries is crucial for maintaining mental health. In the book, Set Boundaries, Find Peace, Nedra Glover Tawwab states "If you think about it, the root of self-care is setting boundaries: it’s saying no to something in order to say yes to your own emotional, physical, and mental well-being." Here's a comprehensive guide to help you identify and address these signs. If they are sounding familiar it may be a good idea to reach out for help.

  1. Neglecting Self-Care: Prioritize You
Neglecting self-care often creeps in when we put the needs of others before our own. If we don't put our own needs first, no one else will. It is important to have activities that bring us joy and allow us to lean into relaxation. Self care could look as simple as having a quiet evening reading a book to recharge and rejuvenate.

    2. Desire to Run Away from Responsibilities: Face Challenges Head-On
Feeling the urge to escape responsibilities might indicate a need to address challenges directly. Instead of avoidance, try empowering yourself by breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Facing challenges head-on can lead to personal growth and a sense of accomplishment.

    3. Feeling Overwhelmed: Seek Balance
Overwhelm is a common experience in today's fast-paced world. Take a step back and assess your commitments. Learn to say no when needed, delegate tasks, and break larger goals into smaller, achievable steps. Seeking balance is key to managing stress and preventing burnout.

    4. Feeling Resentful Toward People for Asking for Help: Communicate Openly
Resentment can strain relationships. Instead of harboring negative feelings, communicate openly about your boundaries. Expressing your needs and finding compromises can foster healthier connections with those around you. Remember - clear communication is kind.

    5. Avoiding Phone Calls and Interactions: Embrace Communication
Avoidance can lead to isolation. Embrace open communication with people who may need your support. Share your boundaries clearly, respectfully and encourage a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their needs.

    6. Unable to Ask for Help or Difficulty Allowing Others to Help: Embrace Support
It's okay to ask for help and accept it when offered. Recognize that vulnerability is a strength, and allowing others to help can strengthen relationships and create a sense of community.

    7. Feeling Burned Out: Prioritize Your Mental Health
Burnout is a serious issue that affects both physical and mental health. Prioritize your mental well-being by taking breaks, setting realistic goals, and seeking professional support if needed.

Recognizing the signs that indicate a need for boundaries can be a great first step to recognizing why things are feeling overwhelming. As women we need to prioritize self-care, communicate our needs openly, and embrace the support of those around us. If you resonate with any of the 7 areas above it might be time to seek extra support in setting boundaries. Although boundary setting can feel daunting at first (especially if you are a people-pleaser) it does get easier over time, and is worth it to protect your mental health.
